Healthcare facilities in the UAE that use regulated radiation sources or radiation generators may need to complete the applicable FANR licensing or registration processes before operating. For medical and dental facilities, early preparation can reduce avoidable delays and help ensure that the equipment, premises, responsible personnel and documentation are aligned.
What is FANR licensing?
FANR provides regulatory services for activities involving regulated materials and radiation generators. Its e-services include issuing, renewing, amending and surrendering licences, as well as other regulatory services. The exact pathway depends on the regulated activity and the facility’s circumstances.
Prepare before submitting an application
- Confirm the facility and regulated activity details.
- Identify the radiation-generating equipment and maintain accurate equipment information.
- Prepare applicable room, shielding and layout documentation.
- Assign the appropriate radiation-safety responsibilities.
- Organise supporting technical and compliance documents.
- Check that required testing, maintenance and calibration evidence is current where applicable.
Licensing should not be treated as a one-time task
After approval, facilities still need to manage renewals, amendments, equipment changes, personnel responsibilities, testing and documentation. Adding or replacing equipment can also create additional regulatory and technical actions. A compliance calendar can help prevent important dates from being missed.
Build a digital FANR compliance file
A digital compliance file should connect each facility to its licences, rooms, equipment, responsible staff, QC reports, maintenance records, radiation protection documents and inspection findings. This creates a traceable record that can be reviewed before an inspection or renewal.
